Come join us at Hearthfire Clay for a 2.5-hour deep dive into the wonderfully tactile world of handbuilding pottery! Whether you're 8 or 80, a total first-timer or someone who just wants to play with clay again — this workshop is made for you.
You'll skip the wheel entirely and discover something even more fundamental: that your hands are incredible tools. Working directly with clay, you'll explore three core handbuilding techniques — pinching, coiling, and slab building — to shape your very own one-of-a-kind piece to take home (eventually — good things take time in the kiln!).
Here's what you'll get into:
- Wedging and prepping clay like a pro
- Pinch pot fundamentals — the original pottery move
- Coil building to add height, texture, and personality
- Slab rolling and construction for clean, geometric forms
- Smoothing, scoring, and surface decoration to make it yours
- A breakdown of what happens next: drying, firing, and glazing
Our instructors keep things hands-on, low-pressure, and genuinely fun. You'll leave with new skills, a little clay under your fingernails, and a piece that's 100% handmade by you.
Who's it for? Everyone! Adults, teens, and kids ages 8+ with an engaged adult are all welcome. This is a great date night, family outing, friend activity, or solo creative adventure.
What's included: All clay, tools, and materials. Firing and glazing are included — your finished piece will be ready for pickup within 4-6 weeks.
What to wear: Practical shoes, and something you don't mind getting dirty. Clay has opinions about clean clothes.
